Atletico Madrid proved too streetwise to entertain another Leicester City fairytale as they quelled a stirring home display to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the third time in four seasons on Tuesday, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
Leicester didn't go out meekly - that wouldn't be the style of the team that seized the Premier League title at pre-season odds of 5,000-1 for the first time last May with a 10-point advantage.
"I've said to the players that they should want more of this and they've agreed that that's what they want", said Shakespeare, whose contract only runs until the end of the campaign.
"Some of us may not play in the Champions League again", he said. We're a squad that believes we can do things some people probably didn't think we're capable of, but we just keep pushing ourselves on the training field and out on the pitch. "Being the last English team getting to the quarterfinals on our Champions League debut is a massive achievement and we can leave the competition with our heads held high". "They had a few blocks on the line". It wasn't to be but at least everyone gave it their all.
For the unlikeliest of Premier League champions, England's last remaining representatives in the Champions League quarterfinals, the journey ended in a 1-1 draw Tuesday night.
"The lads can be proud of themselves, they've given everything".
"The Champions League was a new experience for most of us, we definitely enjoyed it".
OPEC, non-OPEC to meet on same day as group's May gathering
China's economy accelerated for a second-straight quarter, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. U.S. drilling is now set to increase by 123,000 barrels a day in May, according to the U.S.
Croatia is represented in all four of teams which have made the semi-finals -Juventus, Real Madrid, Monaco and Atletico Madrid - something that the likes of Argentina, Italy, France, and England cannot claim.
And Leicester may now be without captain Wes Morgan - who returned after a six-game absence with a back injury - for the rest of the season after he limped out late with an apparent hamstring injury.
Shakespeare's tactical change was "fantastic", he said, and it had been "almost a pleasure to compete" against Leicester.
The Foxes return to Premier League action with an away game at Arsenal next Wednesday, followed three days later with another away game at West Brom. "Full of hope and excitement as we progress", he said.
"I also have to say, what a great performance from our opponents".
However, a weird own goal from Real captain Sergio Ramos levelled things up at 3-3 overall before Bayern saw midfielder Arturo Vidal sent off late on and they went into extra time with 10 men.
