Mr. Mallya dismissed the news as "media hype", but he confirmed on Twitter that an extradition hearing began on Tuesday.

Malya secretly fled India in March 2016 owing more than $1bn after defaulting on loan payments to state-owned banks and allegedly misusing the funds. "It was a voluntary action".

"Officers from the Metropolitan Police's Extradition Unit have this morning, Tuesday 18 April arrested a man on an extradition warrant", a police statement said. "Extradition hearing in Court started today as expected", Mallya tweeted hours after his arrest and subsequent release on bail. "The way the government has acted on Vijay Mallya's case shows the interest and commitment taken by them", Rao told ANI.

Santosh Gangwar, India's junior finance minister said the government would do everything in its power to bring Mallya to justice. "He will be out in a few minutes", a member of Mallya's team was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

The businessman, who owes over Rs 9,400 crore to banks, got bail within three hours of his arrest but officials here said that there is nothing abnormal about it. He was freed on a bail bond worth 6,50,000 pounds and will next appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 17.

Once an extradition request is made, the British government considers merit and India has crossed that hurdle in Mallya's case, the source said.

Sources said the CBI and the Indian High Commission in London will present India's case in the United Kingdom court for extradition of Mallya. Vijay Mallya is in an intoxicated state and it is vivid in the video, he is stammering at times and just going with the flow.

Indian investigators said previous year Mr Mallya had not been co-operating and had ignored their summons to give evidence three times.

This July 2016 case filed by the Serious Frauds Investigation Office deals with the financing of the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

India submitted an extradition request to Britain in February after investigators demanded that Mallya be brought home to face charges.
