Canadian Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan offers prayers at Golden Temple

Harjit Singh Sajjan is the first Sikh to become the Minister of Defence in Canada.

Harjit Singh Sajjan was born in Bombeli, which is in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab in India.

Sajjan also says he is disappointed with the comments of one Indian political leader who labelled him a Sikh nationalist, but is determined to avoid being sucked into internal Indian politics.

Sajjan arrived in India on Monday on a week-long visit. The discussions will take place with Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. The protestors were stopped by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee task force members from coming close to the visiting Minister.

"Mr. Sajjan is a senior dignitary of Canada, who has done commendable work for his community and the country.It is a proud moment for all as we honour him", said SGPC Head, Kirpal Singh Badungar, who was present at the holy Sikh shrine.

Sajjan arrived at the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee worldwide airport here from New Delhi and was received by district administration officers.

Amarinder Singh had stirred a controversy last weekl when he said that he will not meet the visiting Canadian Minister due to his (Sajjan's) links to radical elements linked to the demand for a separate Sikh state, Khalistan.

He will visit Bombeli, his native place to cherish the childhood memories.

The minister will travel to Chandigarh later today to inaugurate the new office of the Consulate-General of Canada.

The visit of Harjit Singh Sajjan to India is to strengthen the bilateral issues regarding defence and security with Canada.
