In his double-murder trial, Baez challenged the credibility of the prosecution's star witness, suggesting he had killed the men and pinned it on Hernandez in exchange for immunity.

Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end convicted of murder, was found dead early Wednesday of an apparent suicide inside his cell at a MA prison, a state correction official said.

The 27-year-old former National Football League star was found by guards hanged with a bedsheet at about 3 a.m. Wednesday and was pronounced dead at a hospital about an hour later. He was then taken to UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m. In addition to the murder charge, the Bristol County Superior Court jury in MA found Hernandez guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Hernandez had been expected to appeal his sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole for the 2013 murder. "We're told Baez believes this could be a murder either by inmates or the folks who run the prison".

Hernandez was serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder.

Hernandez, 27, last week was acquitted of a double murder outside a Boston nightclub in 2012.

Hernandez's death comes on the day his former team is set to visit the White House to celebrate its February Super Bowl victory.

Both Paul George and LeBron James put on a show, James had 41 points and George just edged out LeBron with 43. On the season, the Pacers are averaging 105.1 points, 42.0 rebounds and 22.5 assists per game.

In August of 2012, Hernandez signed a five-year contract for $40 million with the Pats.

Defense attorney Jose Baez suggested that Hernandez was not suicidal and promised to conduct their own "examination" into the death. Hernandez was charged with murder nine days later, and the Patriots released him. While his death is being ruled a suicide, Hernandez's former agent doesn't believe that he would take his life. The only thing Aaron was found guilty of was illegal possession of a handgun.

But when the Patriots returned to the playoffs the next season, Hernandez was unable to even watch on television while he was in prison awaiting trial in one shooting and already a suspect in another.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating, Fallon added.

Since Hernandez has been behind bars, his team - the team he was supposed to build his future with - has gone on without him.

In Connecticut, where Hernandez was raised, friends were in shock and grieving.

"We are aware of the reports, but I don't anticipate that we will be commenting today", the spokesperson said.
