The 457 visa has been popular with many Irish people over the years, and has allowed thousand of Irish to enter Australia since 1996.
Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has adopted a harsher stance towards skilled migrants, scaling back the intake of temporary workers as part of an "Australia first" tilt that will affect tens of thousands of Britons a year.
Dutton said there were 95,757 workers in Australia on primary 457 visas and 76,430 secondary visa holders as at September 30 past year.
Western Australia alone made more than 16,000 applications for 457 visas in the year to June 2012, driven by demand for engineers, WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Deidre Willmott said.
The Australian PM said that the move to abolish the visa, now used by more than 95,000 temporary foreign workers, aims at tackling the growing unemployment in the country.
The new visa will include mandatory criminal checks and tighter English language requirements.
Under the government's plan, the 457 visa will be replaced initially by a new temporary two-year visa which won't be a pathway to permanent residency.
The programme will be replaced by another visa programme with new restrictions.

The government has since clarified that it will be introducing two new visas, available for two or four years.
Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull said businesses that failed to hire Australians over overseas workers would be "named and shamed".
In Australia, the number of jobs eligible for temporary working visas has been dropped, with 216 occupations cut from 651 professions previously eligible for a 457 visa.
"Companies seeking a labour agreement must put forward a strong case which demonstrates need for such an agreement", the spokesperson said.
Inspired by Trump, Prime Minister Turnbull has also pitched for "Australians First" and said Australian jobs should be for Australians. In a move to encourage local hiring, and to stop foreign workers from coming into their country, Australia has abolished 457 work visa.
The 457 visa will be replaced initially by a new temporary two-year visa specifically created to recruit the "best and the brightest" in the national interest, Mr Turnbull said. The government said the visas will be restricted to filling critical skills shortages.
"Instead of grasping the opportunity presented by anti-migrant sentiment across the developed world, the Turnbull Government yesterday chose to join the party", wrote Henry Sherrell, a researcher on migration at Australian National University.
