U.S. military confirms apparent failed North Korea missile test

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis has said that President Donald Trump and his military advisors have been briefed on North Korea's apparent failed missile launch.

US Pacific Command said it tracked a missile launch which blew up nearly immediately.

While the North did not conduct a nuclear test, the specter of a potential escalated US response trailed Pence as he began a 10-day trip to Asia amid increasing tensions and heated rhetoric.

Though tensions had been rising dangerously between Washington and Pyongyang in the lead-up to the April 15 anniversary, the biggest holiday of the year in North Korea, the heightened rhetoric and saber-rattling on both sides could begin to cool down - a pattern that has been common in recent years, especially in the spring, when the USA and South Korea stage their huge annual war games.

It came a day after the parade marking 105 years since the state's found Kim Il-sung was born.

The missile launched earlier this month flew about 60 km (40 miles) but what USA officials said appeared to be a liquid-fueled, extended-range Scud missile only traveled a fraction of its range before spinning out of control.
