Former Bihar MP and don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin was on Monday acquitted in a 28-year-old triple murder case in Jamshedpur for want of evidence. It may be recalled that Shahabuddin has more than 30 criminal cases filed against him and he is now in custody in Tihar Jail in Delhi.

The triple murder had taken place at Jugsalai in the industrial city on February 2, 1989. However, Jamshedpur court, on Monday, acquitted Shahabuddin on account of no evidence against him. According to the prosecution, Shahabuddin was hired by the seven other accused to kill Anand Rao, a contractor whose business rivalry with the plotters was an open secret.

Shahabuddin faces criminal charges in more than 50 cases and is now lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. While three of them died during trial, four were acquitted in 2006. Repeated summons were issued to him but he failed to appear before the court.

Shahabuddin's counsel, senior advocate Kewal Krishna, said: "All the legal procedures - right from recording of his statement to argument and the final judgement - were carried out through video-conferencing".

The RJD leader Shahabuddin faces at least 35 criminal cases including murder, extortion and kidnapping. Shahabuddin is not the only one accused of the murder of the three, the others are: Dasrath Singh, Rama Singh, Birender Singh, Saheb Singh, Kallu Singh, Sushil Singh and Paras Singh.
