A senior United States military official said the deconfliction line remained open as of noon Friday and had been used by U.S. and Russian officials since the USA strike on a Syrian regime airfield.

But even Hillary Clinton called for the U.S.to "take out" Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's airfields.

Trump's decision to attack Syria came three-and-a-half years after President Barack Obama threatened Assad with military action after an earlier chemical weapons attack killed hundreds outside Damascus.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the USA strike "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of the norms of global law".

The "deconfliction line" between Russian Federation and the U.S. has been described as an imperfect but essential tool in times of tension.

"The bombardment of Shayrat will not have a major effect on military operations of the regime", said Hamade, speaking to The Associated Press by telephone from Turkey. Mevlut Cavusoglu said Saturday that the USA intervention was only "cosmetic" unless it removes Assad from power.

Only a week earlier, Tillerson had alarmed US allies by indicating the USA was no longer interested in pushing for Syrian President Bashar Assad's removal from power.

Haley said the US was prepared to take further action in Syria but hoped it wouldn't be necessary. "We expect that those will continue to have an important effect on preventing people from doing business with them".

As a result, Trump took action by launching 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian airbase.

The move puts Trump and Putin in direct opposition to one another over the issue amid an FBI investigation over Russian influence on members of the Trump team during the election campaign.

Erdoğan said while there was good progress in the Astana talks - carried out in parallel to the Geneva process - to reach a political agreement in Syria, "unfortunately it did not develop as we wanted".

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, further said an unmanned aircraft belonging to either Russian Federation or Syria was spotted hovering over the site of the chemical incident after it happened.

The officials, who insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the sensitive matter, said they believe the hospital attack may have been an effort to cover up evidence of the earlier assault. According to US officials, the hangars, airstrips, ammunition storage areas, and control tower were destroyed.

The American ambassador also identified the Iranian government, another key Syrian ally, as an active belligerent in the fight - saying approval by Moscow and Tehran of Assad's actions "will only lead to more murders".

So Trump had to make clear to the Kremlin that the United States would not tolerate this brazen breach of the 2013 pact. Despite intense worldwide pressure, Assad has clung to power since a civil war broke out in his country six years ago, helped by financial and military support from both Russian Federation and Iran.

Russian Federation and Iran have provided Assad with critical military support in his war against rebel groups fighting to topple him.

The president approved the strike while in Florida for a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

United States officials informed Russian forces ahead of the missile strikes, and avoided hitting Russian personnel.

The missile strikes hit the government-controlled Shayrat air base in central Syria, where USA officials say the Syrian military planes that dropped the chemicals had taken off. The missiles targeted the base's airstrips, hangars, control tower and ammunition areas, officials said.

Russian Federation has claimed Tuesday's deaths in Khan Sheikhoun were caused by a Syrian regime airstrike on a rebel-controlled chemical weapons facility. France, Italy and Israel also welcomed the strikes.
