Roof construction delays Mercedes Benz Stadium opening

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will instead now open with an National Football League preseason game between the Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars on August 26.

That absurdly complex roof atop the Atlanta Falcons' Mercedes-Benz Stadium has been the culprit in delaying the coliseum's debut three different times now-from the initial target of March 1 to July 30, when Atlanta United had been slated to bring down the curtain with a highly anticipated soccer match. "Those two things have had a cascading effect on overall workflows related to the roof, and that is the reason for the new timeline".

"We wanted to hold onto that until the last possible moment", Cannon said, "because we were thinking about our fans".

"No concerns about the operability of the roof have ever been expressed to us by the design or construction teams", he said. That game against Jacksonville will be the first public event at the stadium. "Twenty-seven thousand tons of steel, 16 thousand connections, so it is just normal steelwork".

The suites are complete and concessions are also nearing completion.

The stadium with its complicated roof, which will open like a camera lens, had been set to open on July 30 with MLS Atlanta United's game against Orlando City.

As of now, the stadium is expected to open in late August. The dates will be announced at a later time. The Atlanta Falcons' preseason schedule has not been impacted because of the delays.

Cannon said Atlanta United officials continued to list July 30 as the planned first game at the stadium until the need for a delay became certain.

During a teleconference Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer of AMB Group, LLC Steven Cannon said keeping the dome intact is simply an insurance policy, and nothing more. It's been a great experience at Bobby Dodd. "We'll manage through this and ultimately will delight our Atlanta United fan base". Once the Georgia Dome is demolished, that area will be used for parking and tailgating.

Even so, Cannon said the demolition of the Georgia Dome will be put on hold as an insurance policy until a certificate of occupancy is granted for the new stadium.
