PANMUNJOM, South Korea U.S. Vice President Mike Pence declared Monday the "era of strategic patience is over" with North Korea, expressing impatience with the speed and willingness of the regime to move toward ridding itself of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.
The high-profile failure came as the North tried to showcase its nuclear and missile capabilities around the birth anniversary of the North's late founder and as a USA aircraft carrier neared the Korean Peninsula.
Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the strength of America's military might, underlining a message that the Trump administration sought to bring peace through strength. As the brown bomber jacket-clad vice president was briefed near the military demarcation line, two North Korean soldiers watched from a short distance away, one taking multiple photographs of the American visitor. While the North did not conduct a nuclear test, the specter of a potential test and an escalated US response has trailed Pence as he undertakes his Asian tour.
USA officials and experts believe it is some time away from mastering the necessary technology, including miniaturizing a nuclear warhead.
"There was a period of strategic patience but the era of strategic patience is over". Even so, according to Wired, North Korea can not do a missile strike to the United States - well, not this early.
Sunday, April 9: The U.S. deployed a Navy strike group to the waters off the Korean Peninsula, which included two guided-missile destroyers, one guided-missile cruiser, and an aircraft carrier.
In a phone call with reporters Monday, Susan Thornton, the acting assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific Affairs, said the president has "made clear to the Chinese that they should view North Korea as a liability, not as an asset, and that this is an urgent global threat that must be addressed by all peace-loving nations, but especially by China, when they have so much leverage".
Pence spoke a day after North Korea rolled out what purported to be operational long-range missiles at a massive, goose-stepping parade to mark the 105th birthday of the Stalinist state's founder, Kim Il-Sung.

But the main opposition CHP, which led the No campaign, has said it would contest the results. The constitutional reforms were set to grant more power to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
A White House foreign policy adviser traveling with Pence on the plane said the United States did not need to take action "to reinforce [North Korea's] failure".
North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, including two past year.
During the last 60 years, there have also been a series of tunnels dug under the zone by North Korea.
"We do not accept Pyongyang's reckless nuclear and missile actions in violation of numerous UN Security Council resolutions, but this does not mean that it is possible to violate global law in the same way by using force", Lavrov said at a briefing.
Finally, and most importantly, we are well past the point where it is makes sense to open talks with North Korea - as repulsive as that sounds.
"It is heartening to see China commit to these actions".
South Korea, which accuses China or discriminating against some South Korean companies working in China, and the United States say the sole objective of THAAD is to guard against NorthKorean missiles. Last week, he said he would not declare China a currency manipulator, pulling back from a campaign promise, as he looks for help from Beijing, which is the North's dominant trade partner.
The Carl Vinson Strike Group is due to arrive in the region by April 25, according to The Korea Herald, the same day that North Korea is due to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the founding of its army.
