In the women's race, 25-year-old Jordan Hasay ran her first-ever marathon in 2:23:00 to place third.

Keflezighi plans to step down from elite running this fall after the New York Marathon, which would be his 26th event at that distance.

Marcel Hug won Boston for the third time, outpushing 10-time champion Ernst Van Dyk down Boylston Street and finishing in 1:18:04 to beat the course record and world best by 21 seconds. The combination pushed the former 5K and 10K runner, who just a year ago transitioned to road running, to an incredible third-place finish that shattered the American record for a marathon debut.

This marks the first time since 1991 that two American woman finished in the top four places.

Women's division victor Edna Kiplagat (L) and men's division victor Geoffrey Kirui, both of Kenya, pose with the trophy at the finish line of the 121st Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., April 17, 2017.

Rupp (2:09:58) was bidding to become just the second American man to win in Boston in the last 34 years.

He took seventh in last year's Amsterdam Marathon and third at Rotterdam. "I was very proud of being a woman".

Hasay stayed with the front pack of the world's leading runners throughout the morning, finishing barely a minute behind victor Edna Kiplagat of Kenya (2:21.52). It was the biggest showing in the top 10 for American men since seven of them finished there in 1985.

"Maximum pressure and engagement" key to Trump's North Korea policy
Analysts say commercial satellite images from recent weeks indicate increased activity around North Korea's nuclear test site. He's also got a secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, who's called an end to what he called a policy of patience on North Korea.

Women were finally officially allowed to enter the Boston Marathon in 1972. Two bombs went off near the finish line, killing three people and wounding almost 300. It was a hot day in Boston today and it looks like one runner in particular was on fire!

The marathon was the second hottest on record in the last 40 years.

Fifty years on, aged 70, Ms Switzer returned to the starting line wearing the same number.

Leading the pack of the men's race at the Boston Marathon in Framingham, about six miles in, is Emmanuel Mutai, who is going for a unique feat. "To come here to Boston, I knew I was going to face my colleagues who have run many times here".

Hasay said she was honored running with Linden and gathered energy from the chants of "USA, USA" toward the finish. Switzer, who was attacked simply for wanting to run, became an worldwide feminist symbol and helped break the long-held barriers against women in long distance running. Switzer was one of them, and she wore the same bib number as her historic run. So I was looking for who was attacking us.

Monday's race is getting started in temperatures of 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius.) That's ideal for spectators but a bit warm for many runners.
