House Speaker Mac McCutcheon (R-Capshaw) issued a statement Monday afternoon stating he will pray for the former and incoming Governor, and Bentley's resignation will give the legislature the opportunity to once again fully focus on "real problems facing our state".
The husband of Rebekah Mason, the alleged mistress to former governor Robert Bentley, is one of the first to lose his state job in the changing of the guards. A Republican governor and the senior staffer he was having an affair with just happened to come up with a plan meant to have "limited impact" on "political allies", and oh, look, it hurts majority black and majority Democratic counties.
"We need a people elected U.S. senator not a Robert Bentley anointed senator that's not going to fly with all that happened with the Bentley administration and he is now judicially declared and pleaded guilty to being a criminal", says Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler.

He defied repeated calls, including one from his own party, to step down. Sharman spent part of the morning presenting to the House committee communications between Bentley and the married Mason.
Bentley has fought for more than a year against allegations he used public resources to carry out and hide an affair with his former top aide.
