Iran boosts natural gas production from underwater field

South Pars - called the North Dome field in Qatar - is located in the Persian Gulf and is the world's biggest largest gas field with estimated reserves of 51 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and some 50 billion barrels of condensate.

Rohani, who is running for reelection in next month's presidential election, said daily Iranian production at the South Pars Gas Field has reached 540 million cubic meters, up from just 240 million when he was elected in 2013.

Iran's fiscal year ended on March 20 with 95mn m./d of new gas production capacity. Whoever takes first place for production from the shared reservoir, Bloomberg suggests that Qatar will keep its position as top exporter: despite Tehran's ambitions, most of the additional production from South Pars will be consumed by Iran's growing domestic market. New production can barely keep up with domestic demand, and consumption nearly doubled to 191.2 billion cubic meters in 2015 from 102.7 billion in 2005, according to BP Plc statistics.

Iran's construction of LNG plants stalled for years due to worldwide sanctions, which were eased in January 2016. The country is also considering pipelines to Oman, Pakistan and other countries, though cross-border links are scarce in the politically unstable region.

On the occasion of the Army National Day, Rouhani said that Iranian armed forces are much more prepared than any time else but they will not be a threat to any other state.
