But Lotte chairman Shin Dong-bin did give another W7 billion to the K-Sports Foundation early past year, allegedly in return for lucrative duty-free licenses.

Former President Park Geun-hye was indicted Monday for alleged crimes committed during her failed presidency, including accepting bribes from the country's largest conglomerates.

Park Geun-hye once described Choi, 60, as someone who helped her when she had difficulties in the past, an apparent reference to her parents' deaths.

The impeachment of Park in March led to a snap election, for which 15 candidates have been registered.

Park is accused of colluding with her confidante at the heart of the scandal, Choi Soon-sil, who is already on trial for coercing local conglomerates into donating a total of 77.4 billion won (€64 million) to two non-profit foundations.

Independent election monitors have already raised serious concerns about whether the referendum itself met democratic standards. Erdogan's victory was much narrower than expected, and the opposition has declared irregularities in the vote totals.

She lost her presidential immunity and was dismissed from her post when the constitutional court upheld a decision by parliament in December to impeach her.

Park is Korea's third president to stand trial on charges of bribery, though Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo, who were convicted in 1995, were swiftly pardoned by their successor Kim Young-sam.

The former president reportedly denied all the charges during her five rounds of questioning in jail. In return, the Samsung heir was charged with receiving illicit assistance to inherit the management control of the country's biggest conglomerate from his ailing father Chairman Lee Kun-hee who has been hospitalized for nearly three years. Dozens of high-level figures, including Choi, Park's friend of 40 years, top administration officials and Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong have already been indicted and await separate criminal trials.

Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin was separately indicted without detention on bribery charges.

SK Group avoided prosecution as it did not give 8.9 billion won in donations sought by the former president.

Additional bribery charges were also made against Choi, now undergoing her own trial.
