Trump was entertaining the Chinese leader at Mar-a-Lago when he ordered the military strike.
"Yes, heading toward Syria, and I want you to know that", Trump said, recalling what he had told Xi.
The readout of the phone call tersely noted that the two leaders spoke by phone Tuesday night and that it was "productive".
It is not unusual for a politician to say one thing publicly, and believe another privately. "I think he wants to help us with North Korea". Trump couldn't be sure when he launched the attack that a Russian wouldn't be killed, or that some other freak mishap wouldn't arise.
"The Art of the Deal" appears to have edged out the "The Art of War" for now, as the presidents of the US and China spoke of agreements reached at their summit at President Trump's resort in Palm Beach, Fla., last week, including an apparent deal to cooperate in grappling with the North Korean nuclear issue. The two authoritarian governments support each other on major foreign policy problems, dislike domestic protest and see the U.S. in a similar way.
"Anybody that was so brutal and uses gases to do that to young children and babies, it's OK", Trump said, describing Xi's reaction.
"We're honored by the vote".
I wonder if he will be saying the same behind closed doors back in Beijing.

The US President also thanked North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members for supporting his decision last Thursday to launch 59 rockets directed at a Syrian air base in response to a chemical attack on civilians and said it was time to end the war there and return refugees to their homeland. Far from undercutting its currency - the yuan - China has instead been spending its foreign reserves to prop up the yuan at a time when many Chinese are pulling money from the country to invest overseas. And we made a determination to do it, so the missiles were on the way.

Reps. Jim McGovern, D-Massachusetts, and Tom Cole, R-Oklahoma, are circulating a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan, which has not yet been released publicly, calling for the House to debate a war authorization when Congress returns from its two-week recess later this month.
Trump, who has urged China to do more to rein in North Korea, had warned earlier on Twitter that Pyongyang was "looking for trouble" and that the United States would "solve the problem" with or without Beijing's help.
"And that's worth having not as good a trade deal as I would normally be able to make".
