Moscow, Tehran Say 'US Aggression' Against Sovereign Syria 'Inadmissible'

The United States fired dozens of cruise missiles at a Syrian air base on Friday from which it said a deadly chemical weapons attack had been launched earlier in the week, escalating the USA role in Syria and drawing criticism from Assad's allies including Russian Federation and Iran.

H.R. McMaster called on Russia to question its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, saying it's time for Russian leadership "to re-evaluate what are they doing in the Middle East".

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the U.S. missile strike was a "a strategic error, and a repeat of the mistakes of the past", the state news agency IRNA reported.

The missile attack was carried out without permission from UN Security Council and the US Congress. "The world is waiting for the Russian government to act responsibly in Syria".

"Years of previous attempts at changing Assad's behavior have all failed, and failed very dramatically", said Trump.

Earlier on Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said the country's armed forces "did not and will not" use chemical weapons, even against extremist groups.

In the southern city of Daraa, jets believed to be Russian escalated strikes on Free Syrian Army (FSA) and jihadist groups on Saturday and Sunday in an attempt to roll back their gains in the Manshiya district where battles have been raging for almost two months.

Reuters also quoted a Pentagon official as saying the attack is a one-time action, and the United States has no plans to launch further attacks.

Putin said Thursday that groundless accusations in the chemical weapons incident in Syria's Idlib were unacceptable before the investigation into the matter had been carried out while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday criticized the U.S. missile attack as a violation of the worldwide law.

Davis said initial indications show the strike reduced the Syrian government's ability to deliver chemical weapons.

On Thursday, Russia also suspended a pact with the U.S. Moscow has continued to back Assad's regime.

The U.S. government believes the man-made nerve agent sarin was used in the attack.

The incident, if confirmed, would be the deadliest chemical attack in Syria since sarin gas killed several hundreds of people in a rebel-held area near Damascus in August 2013.
