Alonso will drive for a McLaren-backed Andretti-Honda at the end of May, missing the Monaco Grand Prix in order to race in the 500.
The McLaren Honda Formula 1 Team have today been confirmed that Jenson Button will replace driver Fernando Alonso at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, when the Spaniard instead heads to America to take part in the Indianapolis 500.
Any reservations he might have had have obviously been eased by the special appeal of Monaco and the fact that the track could be one of McLaren's best opportunities to score points this season.
Commenting onthe McLaren official website, Button was upbeat about his prospects in a one-off return to Formula 1.
"It's one of my all-time favourite racetracks", said the victor of 15 grands prix who made his Formula One debut 17 years ago with Williams.
Honda-powered McLaren have endured a tough start to the season, with no points from two races, but Monaco's tricky street circuit could suit their auto better and is also one where drivers can make the difference.
Alonso seeks to complete racing's most prestigious title, the sport's so-called "Triple Crown", which comes after a driver wins the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans - the 35-year-old has already driven to victory at Monaco on two occasions.
