India, Australia ink six pacts

After meeting Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, the Australian leader said that the two had agreed to make a fresh push on a proposed bilateral Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). "The prime minister (of Australia) and I recognise that our future is deeply tied to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific".

After holding delegation-level bilateral talks and signing six pacts aimed at greater cooperation, the two heads of state arrived at Mandi House metro station on the Delhi metro's Blue Line to hop a ride.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's maiden visit to India is focused on re-energising the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

After the talks, Mr Modi said that cooperation in the fields of education and research was "one of the most important aspects" of India-Australia ties. We have asked for an early meeting of the negotiators.to identify areas where more work needs to be done, " Mr Turnbull said yesterday at a media conference alongside Mr Modi.

"Now we are working with India to secure timely conclusion of a quality Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which would provide a significant boost to regional confidence", he said.

Two-way trade between India and Australia totalled $19.4bn in 2015-16, with major Australian exports to the country including coal, education-related travel, vegetables and gold. Trilateral cooperation among Australia, Japan and India is welcome.

The four-match series between India and Australia saw plenty of controversies as well, one of them being Smith seeking intervention from the Australian dressing room over the usage of a DRS decision. But he had also admitted that progress was not as fast as they would like it to be, Time of India reported.

The visiting leader will be accorded with a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.
