By 1969, Dan Rooney had taken over the day-to-day running of the Steelers and it was his decision to bring in Pro Football Hall-of-Fame coach Chuck Noll, that made the franchise one of, if not the most recognized franchise in the history of the NFL. He said Dan Rooney and his father went to daily Mass which was part of "their upbringing in strong Irish Catholic families, and it's very much who they are and their identities". "And our commitment is we have something called the Rooney Rule, which requires us to make sure when we have an opening, that on the team or the league level, that we are going to interview a diverse slate of candidates".
Rooney oversaw six championships for a team that hadn't appeared in a title game prior to his taking over. Seventy years later, Dan Rooney was the driving force behind the Rooney Rule. While the NFL nearly had 65 percent of its athletes being Black, only six percent of the league had minority representation as head coaches. He oversaw the coaching change from Chuck Noll to Bill Cowher and was a key factor in the coaching hire of current Steelers' head coach Mike Tomlin.
Former President Barack Obama named Rooney the United States Ambassador to Ireland during his term and he admitted Rooney surpassed his expectations in the role.
