The Masters: Five observations from early in the week

Danny Willett freely admits that the game hasn't entirely been his friend since his breakthrough major triumph at Augusta previous year, but he would have hoped that a return to the Masters may have brought with it a change of fortune. - Masters with a vintage performance, Jordan Spieth could exorcise his demons of last year's collapse, and any of the young and upcoming players like Spain's Jon Rahm could give us a breakout performance.

"It's pretty hard to just go in the trees at Augusta", Willett said recently as he prepares to defend his title this week at the 81st Masters tournament.

In reality, it was built after last year's tournament and is so spacious and well done that many golfers are jealous. That didn't happen, and Willett was atop the list of players to miss the cut at the 81st Masters Tournament.

"It's been a tricky 12 months and we haven't played great golf, but by the same token if you look at the career we've had, we've not really had a slump in form in two years", said Willett. "Like I said, we had that in our own arms, but we let it slip".

"Both Masters experiences were awesome but there was a big difference between being amateur and professional", he says. You've achieved the greatest height in your game.

Sometimes, as defending champion Danny Willett found out, it means outsized demands on your time and plenty of unwanted pressure.

UK: Sarin-like gas used in Syria chemical attack
Following the event, the United States military struck a Syrian air base in response to a sarin gas attack on civilians last week. He also said Khan Sheikhoun, in Syria's north-western Idlib province, had no strategic value and was not now a battle front.

After taking a month off after Augusta, Willett struggled at his first tournament back, missing the cut at The Players Championship.

And so the front nine holes were barely ever seen on television before the dawn of the 21 century; only in 2002 did Augusta allow for full broadcasts of the final round on Sunday.

Willett also revealed that he plans to use the dinner to pay tribute to the late Arnold Palmer by leading his fellow champions in a toast to the four-time Masters champion, with the glasses charged with his favourite drink of iced tea and lemonade. "We hit a lot of good shots all year, but haven't gotten anything", he said.

"We played a lot of good shots but. let it slip", Willett said after another day of blustery and chilly weather that made low scoring hard. "I was hoping to take a nice, good, six-week break in the middle of the year".

"If it goes in the bunker it's not too bad, if it goes a foot right you can get a stance", said Willett. Just went out and played. "You feel like you should be able to, and you've done it once, why can't you do it every time you play". I missed only four greens out there. Bubba Watson, who won green jackets in 2012 and '14, shot 74-78 to finish at 8 over. I'm still within five of the lead going into the weekend with better conditions on the way.
