Kansas Outcome Eyed by GOP as Georgia Contest Nears

#BKP questions whether the voters in Witchita Kansas did not see Estes as a strong candidate, have already turned against President Donald Trump, or are they holding the Republicans in The House of Representative responsible for not repealing and replacing Obama Care.

President Donald Trump made a Twitter appeal for Kansas Republican Ron Estes on Tuesday. Nor was Rep. -elect Ron Estes, the state treasurer, a particularly flawed GOP candidate. Thompson has called the Kansas congressional election more of a referendum on Brownback than on Trump.

Republican Ron Estes, the state treasurer, has won a special election Tuesday night in Kansas to replace Rep. Mike Pompeo, who became President Donald Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director.

Trump dominated the presidential election in the district, garnering 60 percent of the popular vote in November. Estes performed 20 points worse than Trump did in this district just five months ago. According to Bob Beatty, a political scientist at Washburn University, the results should make Republicans extremely anxious.

All of which leads us to conclude that there are national factors that spurred Thompson's surprisingly close loss. Other seats are from South Carolina, Georgia and Montana.

Georgia's April 18 contest to replace former Rep. Tom Price, who is serving as Trump's Health and Human Services secretary, is expected to be more competitive than Kansas.

In Tuesday's special election, Democratic early vote was nearly twice as large as that for Republicans, according to figures provided to me by a prominent Republican pollster.

"He's not just a Democratic, I think he's pretty extremely on the left, and you know, that offends a lot of our sensibilities around here, too", Covert said. The Estes campaign pulled in Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and robocalls recorded by both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced the strike as "act of aggression" and said it violated global law. It said Mr Lavrov and his U.S. counterpart agreed to continue discussions on Syria in person.

Those GOP calls prompted Charlene Health, a 52-year-old homemaker and Republican in Belle Plaine, to cast a ballot for Estes. "I finally did. I realized this was important". The district has been hard hit by the downturn in the agricultural economy and where battered aircraft manufacturing plants have shed hundreds of well-paying, blue-collar jobs. Romney won there by 26 points in 2012, and Trump by 27 points in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Campaign Committee has not spent money to help Thompson at all - and the Kansas State Democratic Party rejected his requests for funding mailers.

Thompson said he plans to run for Congress again in 2018. One GOP operative familiar with the special elections said the GOP realized there might be a problem when polling found that even low-propensity Democratic voters were interested in the race.

Analysts say Libertarian candidate Chris Rockhold's bid for public office was a long-shot.
