Why Surveillance of Carter Page Is Such a Bombshell

If the Post report is correct, USA officials convinced a FISA court judge during the presidential campaign that there is probable cause that Page was "knowingly" working as an agent of a foreign government while advising Trump.

Though FISA warrants are hard to obtain and numerous judges on the court are Republican appointees, Page went even further, comparing his situation to the FBI's surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr.

Page's CNN interview came a day after the Washington Post reported the FBI had received a warrant to surveil him in summer 2016 as part of the federal investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation to influence the presidential race. Mr Trump's critics will see it as powerful proof that those congressional inquiries, and the FBI's underlying investigation into his campaign's Russian links, should persevere-despite the apparent cooling in Russian-American relations since Mr Trump ordered missile strikes against Syria last week.

The report also states that the warrant provides evidence that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "had reason to believe" that a Trump campaign adviser was in touch with Russian agents.

Five days later, Trump met with the Washington Post editorial board and was asked to discuss the results of those meetings.

Congressman Eric Swalwell, member of the House Intelligence Committee, talks with Rachel Maddow about revelations that Donald Trump campaign advisor Carter Page was the target of a FISA warrant.

The intelligence community has already concluded that Russian Federation did meddle in the USA election. Page said he was in Moscow on a visit to meet with businessmen and politicians.

Federal officials cited other contacts between Page and Russian operatives in the FISA application, officials told The Post.

Last week, ABC News reported that Page had been targeted for recruitment as an intelligence source in 2013 by Russian spies promising favors in return for business opportunities in Russia. Nunes also viewed these documents on White House grounds, where two staffers aided in a navigator capacity since intelligence services were reportedly stonewalling Nunes. US intelligence officials believe Moscow intervened to try to sway the election in favor of Trump. "He was one of the more active ones, in terms of being in touch [with the campaign]" the adviser said.

The original 90-day warrant has been renewed "more than once" by the FISA court, the Post report said.

The FBI and two congressional intelligence committees are now carrying out wide-ranging investigations into the Russian campaign to meddle in the US election and boost Trump's electoral chances a year ago, though those investigations have been overshadowed in the past week by the Trump administration's abrupt policy changes on Syria and suddenly chilled relations with Russia. The allegations concerning surveillance and possible wrongdoing by the intelligence community reached a boiling point when former National Security Adviser Susan Rice was named as the Obama official who requested the unmasking of at least one person on Trump's transition team.

Page is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, and he served as a Marine intelligence officer.

"There had been prior reports, but I was so happy to hear that further confirmation is now being revealed", Page said.

Page told the Washington Post that news of the FISA warrant "confirms all of my suspicions about unjustified, politically motivated government surveillance".
