According to Toyota, the TNGA represents a completely new strategy to the way the company designs, engineers, and manufactures its vehicles.

The automaker has invested $22 billion in the US over the past six decades, and switching facilities to accommodate Toyota's efficient production initiative will increase American spending further even as the company makes similar facility upgrades in Japan and the U.K.as well.

The Georgetown plant is Toyota's largest in the world.

In addition to TNGA improvements, TMMK will undergo other makeovers that will, together, modernise and streamline the production process.

The central Kentucky plant employs 8200 workers and that's not expected to change with the investment.

President Donald Trump took credit for Toyota investing $1.33 billion in an existing US factory, championing spending by a Japanese automaker he's blasted for building a plant in Mexico. On Monday, Toyota said it had requested a Trump comment.

While he has criticized auto companies, including Toyota, for investing in Mexican factories that supply vehicles to the U.S., he has also pledged to cut regulations to encourage the expansion of USA manufacturing facilities. TMMK employees live in 80 Kentucky counties, and now Toyota has more than 100 suppliers located across the Commonwealth. The plant is also home to the Lexus ES 350.
