With growing tensions, the Korean peninsula is the closest it has been to a "military clash" since Pyongyang's first nuclear test in 2006, an influential state-run Chinese newspaper said.
China sees North Korea as a buffer between its vital economic regions next to the border and South Korea, with its heavy United States military presence, said John Delury, an associate professor at Yonsei University.

At their Florida summit meeting last week, U.S. President Donald Trump pressed Xi to do more to curb North Korea's nuclear program.

China suspended issue of permits for coal imports from North Korea on February 18 as part of its effort to implement United Nations sanctions.
Xi seemed to reaffirm his intention to help curb North Korea's nuclear threats to United States forces overseas and allies in the region with a phone call to Trump on Tuesday night in which he signalled a new willingness to act.
Sean Spicer, the White House spokesman, said that Pyongyang had been put "clearly on notice" by Mr Trump but he dismissed the North's nuclear threat.
