The Russian foreign minister accused the United States of launching an "unlawful attack" against Syria in retaliation for a chemical weapons strike during a chilly reception in Moscow for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday. It has blamed Syrian rebels.
Tillerson said the chemical attack against civilians made the Russians look "not so good", after Russia helped broker a deal that required Syria to get rid of its chemical weapons stockpiles in 2013. USA intelligence claimed the chemical attack originated there. The U.S. intelligence community has no consensus on whether Russian Federation knew about the attack in advance, the officials said. "We have seen it all already".
Rex Tillerson and Sergei Lavrov had a tense meeting Wednesday.
After Donald Trump's election victory it was supposed to be very different.
Before heading to Russia, Tillerson told reporters that Moscow had either failed to take seriously its obligation to rid Syria of chemical weapons, or had been incompetent. But he says that distinction "doesn't much matter to the dead".
In his first Pentagon press conference, the new defense chief reiterated warnings that further chemical weapons use will be met with fresh U.S. action.

Putin on Thursday again dismissed charges that he sought to disrupt the USA election as "endless and groundless ". Watts is a senior fellow at the Center for Cyber and Homeland Security at George Washington University .
US media and USA allies who want the Syrian leadership removed, applauded the attack. Russian Federation can be a part of that future and play an important role. Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano said after a Syria meeting including Gulf states and Turkey Tuesday that "Russia must not be isolated, indeed within the limits of the possible it must be involved in the process of political transition in Syria".
"It's very important for us to understand the USA position and real intentions of your administration".
Syrians protest outside the UN's office in Damascus in support of the President, Bashar al-Assad, April 11 2017. Assad and Russian Federation have accused the US of supporting terrorist groups, who've staged atrocities to gain global sympathy for their cause.
Syria's government has denied responsibility for the attack, which prompted a US strike on a Syrian air base.
Haley, however, would not offer a timeline for Assad's ouster.
"It was very clear that the Assad regime planned it, orchestrated it and executed it, and beyond that, we can't say right now".
