Sergio Garcia Captures Elusive Green Jacket At Masters, Wins 1st Major

The 38-year-old's round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-three 16th hole.

"It's awesome to do it on his 60th birthday and to join him and [countryman Jose Maria] Olazabal my two idols [as a Masters champion] is something wonderful", said Garcia. "And just pretty much believing in myself and being calm and not let things get to me like I have done in the past". And what I needed to do.

Do you ever have any question about anything you wish to ask and get answer?

Sergio Garcia, of Spain, talks to Justin Rose, of England, after making his birdie putt on the 18th green to win the Masters golf tournament after a playoff Sunday, April 9, 2017, in Augusta, Ga.

Rose missed a seven-foot putt on the 72 hole and then hit his tee shot on the first playoff hole well right, forcing him to punch out into the fairway. Rose was poised to deliver a knockout on the par-5 13th when Garcia went left beyond the creek and into a bush.

Garcia and Rose were tied for the lead heading to the 72nd hole of the Masters. To me, Garcia is still an average to below-average putter and there are still some question marks there, but this win should give him the most confidence he has ever had. The winning putt prompted emotional scenes on the 18th green with Garcia dropping to his knees before embracing his fiancée, Angela, and then heading to the Butler Cabin to be presented with the Green Jacket by fellow European Tour member Danny Willett. He missed the green on No. 6 and did the same for another bogey, and he failed to take advantage of the par-5 8th by making par. But Rose bogeyed 17 to send it to the last, all square. His passing still makes me sad.

"Yeah, I would say this one is one that slipped by, for sure", said Rose, a 36-year-old Englishman.

"But I'm really happy for Sergio". I felt great. I felt in control.

Suddenly, Rose was back to a one-stroke lead with two holes to go.

"I'm really pleased with the way we finished this round to get back to red" under par numbers, Spieth said.

The top eight finishers posted rounds in the 60s. Matt Kuchar (67) and Thomas Pieters (68) tied for fifth. Rose followed that with a birdie of his own, and the two were tied at nine-under going to the 16th tee.

Rose regrouped quickly, however, and has established himself as one of the game's leading players, now ranked 14th in the world.

"Best of luck Sergio Garcia". And having a chance to win it a couple of times was special and this tournament is just not for me. That day, Garcia became one of the prime contenders for the maligned "best player to never win a major" tag. "It's been a long wait, but it's that much sweeter".

The Spaniard won on what would have been the 60th birthday of compatriot Ballesteros, the 1980 and 1983 victor of the Green Jacket, who died in 2011. So, it did cross my mind, but lately I've been getting some good help. "I kind of came to peace with it [not happening]".
