HBO Max streaming service launches to rival Netflix and Apple TV Plus

WarnerMedia has revealed some details for the upcoming streaming service HBO Max!

At launch, HBO Max will be available for free to the 10 million HBO subscribers on AT&T.

In May 2020, Warner Bros.is jumping into the streaming wars with HBO Max.

Max, AT&T's foray into a crowded and competitive streaming television market, will come onto the scene in May 2020, and the service will cost $14.99 a month-the same price HBO subscribers are now paying for that service. But at an investor event in Los Angeles on Tuesday, WarnerMedia execs touted HBO Max's "quality over quantity" approach, even as they talked up the 10,000 hours of content that will be available on the service. And while DC Universe already has most of the live-action DC projects, HBO Max has grander ambitions. "This is uniquely HBO Max", AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said of the service, which will include 10,000 hours of content from a slew of media companies AT&T acquired in its $85 billion purchase of Time Warner previous year. It will be much more expensive than the other two services and it will offer less content when it launches next year.

HBO Max originals announced yesterday include Strange Adventures, a DC Super Hero anthology series executive produced by Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Titans, Doom Patrol). Take a look at the full list of HBO Max content here.

Customers who buy HBO through other cable providers may not be able to make the switch as seamlessly, as AT&T is still in discussions with other providers to allow for HBO Max access.

So what about existing HBO subscribers?

Wildly popular 1990s sitcom "Friends" was confirmed to be leaving Netflix for the HBO Max service in the United States, but won't be making that same leap in Canada.

Obviously, that clashes with the company's image of being the bad boy of premium television, but HBO seems to be taking great lengths to prevent your kids from seeing something they're not supposed to by utilizing multiple user accounts with the option for parents to set age-rating parameters.

AT&T during its Monday earnings call said it was committed to spending between $1.5 billion and $2 billion on HBO Max next year, with plans to add another $1 billion to the pile in each of the following two years.
