Nadal, playing for the first time since his Wimbledon semi-final defeat to Roger Federer, has not claimed a hard-court title since this tournament previous year.

The Canadian, Denis Shapovalov faced the second seed of Montreal Open 2019, Dominic Thiem on his home soil, and in the battle of the one-handers, Thiem defeated Shapovalov 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in his opening round of Rogers Cup.

It's only the second tournament for Nadal since he won his 12th French Open title, and it took him some time on Wednesday to shake off the effects of his inactivity.

After rain delays of six and 30 minutes, Nadal fought off two set points in the first-set tiebreaker before prevailing.

As was expected, Nadal broke at the beginning of the second set with another forehand victor, confirming the break before the rain sent them off the court for two hours, with Evans saving a break point in game five and breaking back in the next game after a huge forehand error from Rafa to level the score at 3-3.

"I really enjoyed my two matches on court, even losing today", said Shapovalov, who beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Monday. It was a close match that Dominic Thiem won in 3 sets.

Khachanov set up a quarterfinal match against third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (5) victor over Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili.

In other tournament news, Rafael Nadal continues to push forward with his defeat of the U.K's Daniel Evans.

Khachanov set up a quarterfinal match against third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (5) victor over Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The 33-year-old, who has just tied Roger Federer on the all-time leaderboard, will face Argentine lefty Guido Pella in the third round on Thursday. Although Evans broke back to level at 3-3 after they resumed, Nadal eventually sealed victory en route to his 378th Masters 1000 win.

"I can not deny that I got a little bit insane", Khachanov said. "Now is the moment to compete", Nadal said.

"When you finish Wimbledon, your body loses a little bit that tension, so it needs little bit of time to recover". And while the 20-year-old Canadian had found wins harder to come by this year after breaking the top 20 in April, Montreal was undoubtedly a happy hunting ground, where the teenager beat Nadal on his way to a first Masters semi-final in 2017. "Against Denis, it was special because he's a local hero".

Hurkacz saved nine of 10 break points against the world number five, who failed to convert any of his four chances in the third set. "If I give him time to get behind the ball and dictate the points, it's going to be tough".

Auger-Aliassime, who started the year ranked 108th, advanced to Thursday's round of 16 after victories in all-Canadian matchups with Vancouver's Vasek Pospisil and Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont.
