‘Time to say goodbye’ to BBM consumer service on May 31

It's not clear how many consumer users of the BBM service are out there waiting for a lifeline. The rescue act has been prompted by Emtek's decision to shutter consumer BBM on 31 May. The blog post adds that despite putting efforts in improving the platform and making it more engaging, people moved to other messaging apps and it became hard for BBM to sign-in new users.

The Verge reported that the enterprise version of the app, called BBMe, would continue operations. This will now be unbundled and available to "working professionals". After that first year, BBMe costs $2.50 for a 6-month subscription.

BlackBerry couldn't resist a pointed jibe at a rival. It will be available in the Apple App Store soon. For many, it was the main reason to purchase a BlackBerry device. In addition to the Android, and iOS versions, BBMe is also available on Windows and Mac and offers numerous features BBM consumers are already familiar with such as group chats, voice calls, video calls, as well as the edit, retract and expiring message options.

Meanwhile, following Emtek's decision, BlackBerry has chose to step in, and the company revealed in a press release that it is bringing BBM Enterprise to the individual users.

"Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on", the company said in a statement published on its Facebook page.

The U.N. refugee agency says it has evacuated almost 180 migrants from a detention center close to the area of fighting. Asked whether that included ruling the whole country, the official said, "That is up to the people of Libya".

BBM was very popular in the early 2000s.

"Three years ago, we set out to reinvigorate BBM consumer service, one of the most loved instant messaging applications".

BBMe is a secure messaging platform that also protects your privacy. Like Whatsapp, end-to-end message encryption is also available. Eventually conceding to market pressure and opening up the platform to iOS and Android devices proved too little, too late to turn the market trend around.

According to BBM's updated FAQ page, users won't be able to use BBMoji after May 31 and existing rewards after May 20. BBM is offering refunds for Stickers but not for BBMojis. I'm sure many of you remember BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), which was built into the company's devices.
