Those involved in talks said the Labour leadership was in favour of a redrafted amendment proposed by backbenchers Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson, which would see the party abstain on the Brexit deal if a second referendum were promised on those terms.
Corbyn on Monday said he would put forward or support a parliamentary vote on holding a second referendum if the party's own plan for Brexit is rejected.
"We will back a public vote in order to prevent a damaging Tory Brexit or a disastrous no deal outcome", Corbyn said, following the Commons defeat on Wednesday evening.
She looks to have postponed a moment of reckoning in the deeply divided legislature by promising lawmakers they would be given the chance next month to vote against a no-deal Brexit and delay Britain's exit day if her agreement is rejected.
If her deal is voted down, May has promised that lawmakers will get a chance to vote the day after on whether to leave with no deal and then on March 14 to vote on asking the European Union to delay the deadline.
Shadow minister Richard Burgon tweeted there would be more opportunities to back Mr Corbyn's plan, and failed to mention the notion of another Brexit referendum.
MPs later rejected a Scottish National Party amendment to rule out a no-deal Brexit in any circumstances and at any time by a margin of 288-324.

An amendment tabled by Labour's Yvette Cooper, created to pin the PM down by placing her promise in a motion approved by Parliament, was passed by an overwhelming 502 votes to 20.
However, one shadow minister who strongly supports a second referendum also said the timing was not a huge issue as there could be another attempt at achieving a people's vote if May's deal is brought back to the Commons a third time when a no-deal Brexit is a much more serious possibility.
Tom Watson said he had also asked for a meeting with Jeremy Corbyn to discuss how to crack down on anti-Semitism within Labour.
It sets out a plan to put into law a commitment that, by March 18, parliament must have either approved an exit deal, backed a no-deal Brexit, or May must have requested an extension to the Article 50 negotiating period.
But Labour said he had effectively been sacked. There will not now be a no-deal Brexit in 30 days' time because there is not a majority in the House for crashing out without a deal.
"Sadly, Mrs May has been more interested in the small group of hard-line Eurosceptics in her own party who are willing to accept Brexit at any cost - but I'm not willing to put residents' jobs, rights at work, or our economy at stake".
