Met office issues ice warning for north

With the M25, M3 and A3 all covered by the Met Office's yellow weather warning.

Weather forecasters predict snow for much of the UK.

The significant cold would mean a "real wintery feel". It says current indications suggest next week will be cold and rather unsettled.

The coldest night in the United Kingdom so far this winter was last Friday when Braemar in Aberdeenshire plunged to -10.8C (12.6F), but another Arctic blast could send temperatures plunging even further by the middle of the week. Tuesday is likely to be more wintery.

In Reading, rain is expected from 2pm to 7pm, and at around 8pm, snow will fall.

Forecaster Simon Partridge said: 'A cold week ahead started on Sunday with a straight northerly, with air coming all the way from north of Greenland, near the North Pole.

A dramatic weather map shows how a large stripe of low pressure sweeping towards the United Kingdom from the north-west will barrel through the nation.

Light rain, possibly turning to sleet, is expected tomorrow afternoon which could turn to ice on pavements and untreated surfaces.

Nationally, some areas could get up to 10cm of snow on high ground as Arctic winds from the north move into the UK.

Met Office meteorologist Helen Roberts said: "It will turn colder still on Friday with temperatures in low to mid-single figures, overnight sinking to freezing quite widely so there will be a risk of frosts".

"Lowest temperatures will be around -1 to +2 degrees with widespread frost". Top temperatures 6 to 8 degrees, in a moderate to fresh northwest breeze.

Then on Thursday more snow flurries are set for the country.

The first, covering south and west Scotland, is in force between 1am on Tuesday and 12pm the same day.
