Gov. DeSantis Suspends Sheriff Israel

Sheriff Israel repeatedly defended their actions and his own when asked about the failures by the investigating commission. His executive order states the sheriff's office "failed to contain and maintain security" during the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in 2017, which resulted in a breach of airport security. The failure of the radio system added to the chaos that included SWAT teams not knowing where to land their helicopters. The families of the victims deserve accountability.

DeSantis said during a news conference outside the sheriff's office headquarters that Israel failed to keep families and children safe before and during the February 14 shooting that left 14 students and three staff members dead inside the three-story freshman building.

If Israel challenges the suspension, the state Senate would hold a trial and could either fire or reinstate him. And furthermore, when Scott Israel had said that they had no legal means to go and arrest this murderer, actually that was a lie too.

"I've called for Sheriff Israel to resign and he's refused to do that so I've subsequently called for his removal and I hope Governor will do that today", he said.

"There was no wrongdoing on my part", Israel said at the press conference. "I look forward to continuing to work to serve my term over the next two years until 2020". Israel said he served for six years. "It is my intention to embark on this enormous task to restore the confidence of families and residents of Broward County toward the Broward Sheriff's Office, which also requires that I fix the problems that exist". "This was about politics, not about Parkland".

Israel said his suspension amounted to the newly seated governor fulfilling a campaign promise he made well before the commission issued its findings on the massacre response.

"Needed a fresh start at the South Florida Water Management District", Gov. DeSantis said on Thursday.

"One more second and she makes it", Guttenberg said. Israel fired back, calling it "disingenuous political grandstanding".

Israel's replacement, former Coral Springs Police Sgt. Gregory Tony, will be presented at the event, a source said. "I understand it's easier to say "Suspend Sheriff Israel" than it is to address the real problem: The problem around this nation of gun violence".

Soon after the February 14 mass shooting, Israel faced criticism about his agency's response, including calls for his resignation.

Israel was singled out for a poorly timed change in policy allowing sheriffs to choose whether or not to enter a building where there an active shooter, where previously they were trained to enter.

Under Florida law, DeSantis has the right to suspend election officials accused of "criminal activity, misfeasance, incompetence or neglect of duty", according to ABC News.
