The Times reports that it's unclear if the Mueller team is still on the counterintelligence angle, and that former law enforcement officials believe that the agents who opened it may have overstepped their bounds.

The criminal and counterintelligence elements were coupled together into one investigation, former law enforcement officials said in interviews in recent weeks, because if Trump had ousted the head of the FBI to impede or even end the Russian Federation investigation, that was both a possible crime and a national security concern.

President Trump told reporters at the White House Friday he had "very easily" completed his written answers for Mr. Mueller's investigation.

FBI officials were so alarmed by President Donald Trump's firing of Director James Comey and other behaviors that they opened an investigation into whether the president had been working against us interests on Russia's behalf, The New York Times reported Friday.

"The investigation the F.B.I. opened into Mr. Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice".

The entire investigation was taken over several days later when special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed to investigate Russia's attempts to influence the 2016 election as well as possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

A Defense Department spokesperson later said that while equipment was being moved out of Syria, troops were not withdrawing. USA forces' vehicles and structures are seen on the outskirts of the northern Syrian town of Manbij on December 26, 2018.

They were also motivated by his reported statements during a May White House meeting with visiting Russian officials that he had fired Comey because "he was insane, a real nut job".

"I acknowledge that", Giuliani said.

"This shows that Bob Mueller can demonstrate to a court, without the testimony of Paul Manafort, that the campaign had a connection to Russian intelligence and the connection involved information going from the campaign to the Russians", Fox News legal analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said Wednesday. According to Politico, at least 33 people and three companies have been charged as a result of the Mueller investigation.

For one, also this week, the US attorney for the Southern District here in NY indicted Natalia V. Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who met Manafort, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner in Trump Tower in June 2016 to discuss acquiring dirt on Hillary Clinton.
