Ex-NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober has a common problem: thieves are stealing his Amazon packages right from his front porch. When they open the stolen "package" it sprays them with a fog of fine glitter and five squirts of fart spray.
But when he presented the footage to police they said they were unable to investigate.
The package was left on Mr Rober's porch addressed to "Kevin McCallister" - the boy played by Macaulay Culkin in the 1990 movie Home Alone. He also set it up so he could upload the video to the cloud and track it down using Global Positioning System.
YouTuber punishes package thieves with glitter bomb, fart sprayer
Meanwhile, when the box's lid was lifted, it would set off a can of "fart spray" and a centrifugal motor attached to a cup of glitter, prompting comical responses from the thieves. He also installed four smart phones that would track the package location and record the encounter. "On every occasion, the thieves abandoned the package once it had been triggered and they or their property had been doused in glitter", BBC News reports. The best part is that Rober used cameras and Global Positioning System technology to recover the device and use it over and over again, all while recording thieves' reactions.
Because the box is equipped with Global Positioning System technology and the LTE-data smartphones, Rober will know where the package is and receive good video evidence of perpetrators' reactions.
His package is also equipped with a tracking device so he can recover it every time it's taken.
"The moral of the story is, just don't take other peoples' stuff", Rober said.
