Here's What Heather Nauert Will Bring to the Role of UN Ambassador

Even before Donald Trump officially announced his nomination of State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to succeed Ambassador Nikki Haley as USA ambassador to the United Nations, the rumored pick was pilloried over Nauert's lack of diplomatic experience. "I did not know him until recently when I went through the process of looking at people and he was my first choice from day one, respected by Republicans and respected by Democrats".

Nauert, 48, had been touted for the post since October when Haley announced that she was stepping down.

He noted that Nauert has worked at the State Department for almost two years, and she has been involved in key meetings and discussions, including working very closely with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Mr Trump earlier said his daughter, Ivanka, would be flawless for the role but conceded he'd be accused of nepotism if he appointed her.

"She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time", Trump told reporters last month.

Rumors have swirled about her nomination since early November after current ambassador Nikki Haley resigned on good terms with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in US diplomacy. Haley was also a diplomatic novice - though she did arrive in NY with the six years experience of running SC as governor. If confirmed by the Senate, she would be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy. That means Nauert could be overshadowed by Pompeo or Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, who had the United Nations job in 2005 and 2006. But she has no experience as a diplomat, she has no meaningful experience in government.

A senior White House official said late on Thursday that the United Nations ambassador post would not remain part of the Cabinet, as it has been under Haley. She also would be going up against foreign counterparts like the United Nations representatives from Russian Federation and China, who each have decades of experience in diplomacy. In a sign of the difficulties the administration has had, the UN General Assembly on Thursday rejected a US -sponsored resolution condemning Hamas, the Islamist group that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

The moves were expected; Trump's comments offered official confirmation.

Haley is a powerful presence in the administration and won Cabinet-level status despite officially reporting to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Prior to Fox, Nauert worked at ABC News.

Here are the top facts that could provide an exhaustive look at the United States president's pick for the top UN role, largely seen as a stepping stone to assuming more senior roles in government.
