Google Pixel 3 XL first impressions: Android’s poster boy

Google's big launch event kicks off tonight from 4pm with other products including a new Pixel Slate tablet also expected to be revealed.

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL immediately drew comparisons to other flagship Android smartphones in the market, particularly Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, respectively.

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were the most anticipated (most leaked) devices.

Google is all set for the Pixel 3 global launch on October 9.

The Always On display switches to a different view, which allows at-a-glance info (your schedule and more) as well as giving you easy access to the Google Assistant.

The US SIM-free price of the two devices starts at £739 for the Pixel 3 and £869 for the Pixel 3 XL.

The company said the Pixel 3 will even be able to charge wirelessly through a case. The Google Pixel Stand will be available in India for ₹6,900 and will be up for pre-orders along with the smartphones. The Pixel 3 features a 5.5-inch Full HD+ display with pixel density of 443 pixels per inch, but the Galaxy S9 has a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with pixel density of 570 pixels per inch. Alongside the price for the USA markets, Google has also announced the price for the Indian markets.

The Pixel Slate tablet has a 6-million pixel display and was described as "a ideal device for play and work", by Trond Wuellner, Google's director of product management.

The new feature, named Call Screen, is an extension of artificially intelligent technology unveiled earlier this year when it was used to phone a hair salon and book an appointment on behalf of a human. As far as the camera goes, both devices have a 12.2MP single-lens rear camera with a f/1.8 aperture and 1.4μm. It starts at $599, with a complementary keyboard for $199 and a pen for $99. The price has held steady at $35, and you'll still control the Chromecast exclusively with your computer or mobile device rather than a remote control.
