President Donald Trump has given the FBI one week to conduct an investigation of the allegations that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted a woman in 1980s.

"We can confirm the FBI has reached out to interview Ms. Ramirez and she has agreed to cooperate with their investigation", Ramirez's attorney, John Clune, told CNN and other outlets.

"I've ordered the FBI to conduct a supplemental investigation to update Judge Kavanaugh's file", Trump said in a statement Friday. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

He said before the vote, in agreement with Democrats, that he'd be calling for a one-week delay to allow the FBI to investigate the sexual misconduct claims against the nominee.

Republicans on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary opposed the delay because, they insisted, Kavanaugh has been through six previous full FBI background investigations since entering public service 25 years ago. Ramirez has said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party in the early 1980s when they were Yale students. Ford could also not recall where or when she was molested.

Recognizing that Flake and a handful of other senators' votes appeared contingent upon the investigation, Republican leaders and the White House relented. The committee on Thursday heard emotional and sometimes combative testimony from both Kavanaugh and Ford. Judge has also denied Ford's allegations.

Either way, his agreement that the Federal Bureau of Investigation should be allowed look again into Judge Kavanaugh's background and the allegations against him was a significant moment.

A background investigation is, by its nature, more limited than a criminal probe, and FBI agents will not be able to obtain search warrants or issue subpoenas to compel testimony from potential witnesses.

Through tears, they implored him to change his mind about his Kavanaugh vote. Flake says he will vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

"Judge Kavanaugh is a good man".

Ford told the Judiciary Committee that some weeks after the alleged assault, she ran into Judge at a local grocery store where he was working for the summer. "His face was white and very uncomfortable saying "hello" back". I voted for President Obama in 2008 and 2012. She hasn't accused Kavanaugh of raping her. Swetnik described Kavanaugh as a "mean drunk" in high school who was physically and verbally aggressive with girls. Evidence of any substance abuse problems could color a claimant's accusation, but the FBI notably does not make any conclusions about the credibility or significance of an allegation in a background investigation report.
