It won nine Emmys this year, meaning the blood-spattered tale of the battle for the Iron Throne - which returns in 2019 for an abbreviated eighth and final season - now has 47 awards overall.

They noted that NBC has most nominations for broadcast outlet.

The cast and crew of TV's best shows gathered at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles for the 2018 Emmy Awards on the night of Monday, September 17.

The awards continue to be dominated by the likes of HBO, Showtime, FX, and more recently Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix.

Claire Foy for The Crown wins the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series.

Despite six nominations, Happy Days star Henry Winkler never won TV's highest honour until this year, when he took home a best supporting actor in a comedy award for HBO's Barry, playing acting coach to a contract assassin.

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace won in the limited series category.

"Thank you to Netflix for your support of artists", Jeff Daniels, a supporting actor victor for Godless, said as he accepted his award. She noted that the Maisel character was inspired by her father, "so I had to turn a 6-foot-two Bronx Jew into Rachel Brosnahan".

Thandie Newton referenced Che's joke when she accepted the award for best-supporting actress in a drama series for her work on Westworld.

In another win for Netflix, Regina King received the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie award for Seven Seconds. It might not have been a traditional awards speech, but it had a certain verve.

"Maisel" won for best comedy series and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino won for writing and directing.

Stephen Daldry, two-time Olivier Award victor and nominee of many an Academy Award since the early 2000s, surprisingly edged past helmers of The Handmaid's Tale, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and Ozark to win Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

"Working with these people is just a weird treat, and I don't know what I did to get so lucky because I'm kind of very bad, but I just feel like the work itself is really satisfying and really great and I'm really proud of the show", she said. "It's because I want to call you my wife", Weiss said.

Bill Hader won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for "Barry".

Oh played along from her seat: "Thank you, but it's an honor just to be Asian", said the Korean-Canadian actress.

The wins give networks and streaming services bragging rights to use in marketing to try to make their shows stand out in a crowded TV landscape where hundreds of scripted shows, reality series and other programming fight for viewers.

FX won 12 in total.
