Wife of Pakistan's jailed ex-PM Nawaz Sharif dies in London

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of ex-Premier Nawaz Sharif, died in London on Tuesday after losing her battle with cancer.

Jailed ex-premier Nawaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz are now in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi, serving their sentences in the Avenfield corruption case; and were handed jail sentences of 10 years and seven years respectively.

Kulsoom also served as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) after military dictator put Nawaz in exile by a bloodless coup in 1999. PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif will be proceeding to London to bring Kulsoom's body to Pakistan.

The lady, who remained an active political worker till 2017, was suffering from throat cancer in London's Harley Street Clinic since June.

With her husband jailed by General Pervez Musharraf, she broke through a police barricade that had been set up around her home in Lahore in July 2000 in an attempt to prevent her from leading a public rally.

President Dr Arif Alvi has expressed grief over the passing away of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

"The Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom has been directed to provide all possible assistance to facilitate the heirs of Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz", his office said in a statement.

In September that year, she handily won that by-election, beating out the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Yasmin Rashid, despite not being able to campaign. They prayed eternal peace for the departed soul and commiserated with the bereaved family.
