A powerful natural disaster flattened houses and toppled bridges on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok, killing at least 98 people and shaking neighboring Bali, as authorities said Monday that rescuers still hadn't reached some devastated areas and the death toll would climb. It was also felt strongly in the neighbouring Bali, a predominantly Hindu island in the world's largest Muslim majority nation.
"Our hearts go out to those affected and who have lost loved ones".
The Indonesian Red Cross said in a Tweet that it helped a woman give birth after the quake at a health post.
"We know areas where there's a high risk that an natural disaster will occur but exactly when is hard to say", Professor Elders said.
Video showed screaming people running in panic from houses in a Bali neighborhood and vehicles rocking.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was centred 50 kilometres northeast of the city Mataram on the northern part of Lombok island, with a depth of 10 km. However, an initial warning of a tsunami with waves of up to half a metre was later withdrawn.

One day on, the usually-picturesque holiday hotspot is a scene of mayhem as panic-stricken tourists look to make their getaway as officials evacuate the islands.
About 90 personnel from the military, police and national search and rescue agency swarmed around the flattened building Tuesday, using cutting equipment to pry apart the tangled debris.

Like its famous neighbor Bali, Lombok is known for beaches, mountains and a lush interior.
"We were knocked certainly to the floor", he told Sydney radio 2GB on Monday. "But people out in the villages or elsewhere haven't been so lucky, unfortunately".
American singer John Legend and his wife, model and TV star Chrissy Teigen, are also on holiday in Indonesia and have shared updates on social media. One of the names she gave the baby boy was "Gempa", which means quake.
