The animal was killed by the injured guard's colleague "in an act of self-defence", the German Hapag Lloyd Cruises company said.

News of the shooting was criticized on social media by observers who blamed the cruise line for intruding on the polar bear's habitat.

"We do not know anything about the size of injury, but the man is taken aboard MS Bremen and is receiving treatment at the infirmary there, while waiting for the helicopter to arrive on site", Rune Danielsen, rescue leader from HRS told Aftenposten. If the opportunity presents itself, polar bears will also consume carcasses, such as those of dead whales.

"The man was attacked by a polar bear and injured on his head", Hapag Lloyd Cruises, who operates the ship, said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Arctic tourism, now in high season, has been on the rise in recent years. His condition has not been made available, but the spokeswoman said he was "responsive".

Shaqiri: Liverpool boss Klopp stunned by overhead kick
But Klopp has dismissed those comments before Saturday's meeting between the two sides in MI in the International Champions Cup. I can't see in the moment the need, but there are 12 days to go and a lot of things can happen.

"Landings are possible only in a few places; these are not there to serve the objective of polar bear observation, on the contrary: polar bears are only observed from aboard ships, from a safe distance".

The man was a crew member onboard MS Bremen operated by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

According to Hapag-Llyod Cruises, the incident occurred when the four-person polar bear guard team was preparing for a shore leave. They then set up a land station and check the area again to make sure that there are no polar bears in sight.

According to the cruise company, all ships travelling in the northern region are required to employ polar bear guards to protect passengers on sightseeing tours. In 2015, Czech Jakub Moravec was pulled out of the tent by a polar bear, but escaped with slight damage.

Marcia Paul added: "So we go into their already depleted territory for kicks and the poor bear gets shot cos he's just doing what polar bears do, hunt prey, I'm ashamed to be a human being sometimes". Some are saying it was a needless death of a vulnerable animal and that tourists shouldn't have been there in the first place.
