But following the stinging commentary from the North, he allowed that much work remains.
Pompeo reiterated that Trump was "committed to a brighter future for North Korea".
However, Pompeo said the progress achieved thus far did not warrant any concessions.
Pompeo shrugged off the accusations, insisting the talks were being conducted in "good faith" and making progress, and adding sanctions would only be lifted with "final" denuclearisation.
Pompeo said his meeting with Kim Yong Chol, a vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, produced progress and they talked "a great deal" about a potential timeline for the denuclearization process.
After the historic U.S.
"Proving once again that only fools rush in, Trump forced a summit for cheap headlines", Scarborough wrote, continuing the ongoing feud between himself and president Trump.
There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearisation" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States. And, the promised remains have yet to be delivered.
Pompeo told the North Korean negotiator that he "slept just fine".
"We agreed to the denuclearisation of North Korea", he wrote, despite the fact that the declaration signed by the two leaders refers to the denuclearisation of the "Korean peninsula" - a vague formula that leaves room for various interpretations.
Who the United States and China have trade disputes with
Touching on China's massive trade surpluses with the United States, Trump told his audience, "They've been killing us". Trade disputes are nothing new for the two economic superpowers, and they are not confined to targeting each other.
"The US is fatally mistaken if it went to the extent of regarding that the DPRK would be compelled to accept, out of its patience, demands reflecting its gangster-like mindset", the statement said, referring to North Korea by its official initials. "But this expectation and hope of ours was so naive as to be gullible", the statement said.
"The U.S. side never mentioned the issue of establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, which is essential for defusing tension and preventing a war", an unidentified foreign ministry spokesman said.
North Korea also accused the United States of trivializing the significance of suspending military exercises with South Korea. "It can be your miracle in North Korea as well", Mr Pompeo said.
So North Korea is stalling on even the simplest promise made last month.
On Friday, Pompeo held almost three hours of talks with Kim Yong Chol and a working dinner that Nauert described as further "relationship building".
He claimed that "When we spoke to them about denuclearization, they did not push back" but admitted the "road ahead will be hard and challenging". He and the head of the North Korean negotiating team, Kim Yong Chol, cracked jokes during a working dinner, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. "If you make the Americans fight for every inch, the Americans will start measuring progress in inches - and will wind up paying by the inch".
Speaking privately, U.S. officials suggested the harshly-worded North Korean reaction was a negotiating tactic.
"We did have very serious discussion on very important matters yesterday, ' Kim Yong Chol said".
"Realistically, the only way you get to a denuclearised North Korea is if it has a better relationship with the United States". Three months later, North Korean officials are saying Xi will definitely show up for the big anniversary celebration two months from now because he surely wouldn't dream of refusing the invitation.
