Apple's AirPower Wireless Charger Might Be Released In September

The company's AirPower charger isn't your regular wireless charger - it's a charging mat that's capable of wirelessly charging up to 3 devices at the same time. These issues have apparently been addressed, enabling the wireless charging mat to go into testing at Apple employees' offices ahead of general availability in the fall.

At the time, Apple said it expected the device to be available for purchase in 2018, but it didn't say when specifically. Another is AirPower's complex circuitry, which is necessary to allow compatible devices to be placed anywhere on the mat for charging. Citing anonymous sources, Bloomberg reports that the AirPower product won't be seen in Apple stores until September. While a wireless future is desirable, it is hard at this point, to imagine a time when wires become completely obsolete and are not necessary, not even for some light debugging or phone resetting.

The firm considered removing the current charging system on the iPhone X, but they decided against it, as wireless charging is still slower than traditional charging.

In a rare move for Apple, it suggested that users buy charging hubs from Mophie and Belkin, instead of selling its own charging accessories.

According to Bloomberg, Apple engineers have been working on fixing several issues with the product. First revealed during Apple's iPhone X announcement, the Californian company has since provided little information. Unfortunately, pricing for the wireless charger remains a mystery. A new version of the AirPod case would support wireless charging. "The multi-device charging mechanism is challenging to build because it likely requires different sized charging components for the three types of devices, which would all overlap across the mat", states the Bloomberg report.

Apple designers eventually hope to remove most of the external ports and buttons on the iPhone, including the charger, according to people familiar with the company's work.

Interestingly, Apple has faced a lot of manufacturing hurdles with some of its other recent products such as the iPhone X and HomePod. Hopefully such a powerful friend on the production line will help Apple make good on its "2018" release window. For example, Apple's wireless headphones, AirPods, were delayed in 2016.

The AirPower should be released "before or in September", according to a Thursday report.
