Her town of Kikai is really a small island of roughly 7,000 people between Okinawa and Kyushu, the southernmost of the four primary islands of Japan.

The world's oldest person, Nabi Tajima, has died in hospital.

Mrs Tajima, who was born on 4 August 1900, had seven sons, two daughters and reportedly more than 160 descendants.

She had been hospitalized since January and had lived in a nursing home for many years before that.

"She passed away as if falling asleep".

Another Japanese woman, Chiyo Yoshida, takes up the mantle of the world's oldest person, according the US-based Gerontology Research Group. South of Tokyo lives at Kanagawa prefecture, also is now expected to turn 117.

"She can eat by herself and spends every day in good health", her family said in a statement.

In her country alone, Nabi had been holding the oldest living person title since 2015.
