Lebanon blast: Hamas official wounded in vehicle bomb attack

The Hamas Movement accused Israel on Sunday of trying to assassinate one of its staff members in the city of Sidon, southern Lebanon, causing injuries to his legs.

The official Lebanon News Agency said the explosion went off as Hamdan was getting into the vehicle.

The Lebanese Army also released a statement soon after the bombing, confirming that an explosion had targeted Hamdan as he was entering his auto. It reported that he appeared to have a security role and was being tracked by Israel. Security forces sealed off the site of the explosion in a northern residential district of Sidon, 40 km (25 miles) south of Beirut.

"A bomb placed in a BMW in Sidon detonated, wounding Hamas official Mohammed Hamdan", a military source said. The largest Palestinian refugee camp is located in Sidon.

A Hamas official in Sidon, Ayman Shanaa, told Palestinian television station Paltoday that Hamdan was "slightly wounded" in the attack.
