The flu is raging across Oregon, and two children have already died in the last month, according to the Oregon Health Authority.
All across the state, health agencies are reporting increased emergency room visits, hospitalizations and positive flu tests.
Last flu season, 72 people died from flu-related illnesses in Idaho, more than triple the average of 23 deaths during each of the previous four flu seasons. Statistics indicate this year is no worse than the last, this year's flu vaccine is equipped to help fight a version of the virus common to Oklahoma, and we may be reaching the peak of the system.
"It still means we have a lot more flu to go", said Dr. Dan Jernigan, director of the CDC's Influenza Division at the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. This year's vaccine is effective against both the H3N2 and the H1N1 strain.
The H3N2 strain, known as "Australian flu" or "Aussie flu", has been linked to a number of deaths in Ireland.
As parts of the country are starting to see relief, Levine said those in the Northeast shouldn't let their guard down, "We have every right to believe the flu will get worse in Vermont". On Tuesday, Dr Sands urged Bahamians to take warnings related to the H3N2 flu strain seriously. Antivirals are used to treat those at high-risk for flu complications - young children, the elderly, individuals with underlying medical conditions and women who are pregnant.
"Around 7,500 people around the country are now registered with the survey and, during the winter, they voluntarily report if they have had flu-like symptoms during the previous week", said a spokeswoman.
I think the CDC has spoken - as have various other organizations like the Infectious Diseases Society, pediatric groups - [about] appropriate use of antivirals, and we need to keep in mind to use them during the coming flu season because we expect the vaccine to work, but not as well as we would like.
The Iowa Public Health Department says the eight were reported in the past week. "Be sure to wash your hands, particularly if you are sick yourself", Harris said.
