Ford F-150 Diesel Claims 250 HP, 30 MPG Ratings

Ford's first diesel-powered 2018 F-150 pickup can deliver an EPA-rated 30 miles per gallon in highway driving, which would put it among the most fuel-efficient pickups available when it goes in sale in the spring.

When it launched the updated 2018 Ford F-150 past year, the American automotive giant promised that a 3.0L Power Stroke diesel engine version would be introduced further down the road. Retail drivers can order the Power Stroke for the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trims in SuperCrew or SuperCab-the former offered with a 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed, and the latter with a 6.5-foot bed. Although the 3.0-liter found under the hoods of some Land Rover SUVs is similar to the F-150 unit, engineers from Ford said their diesel engine for the F-150 will have key differences including an uprated turbocharger and higher-pressure fuel delivery.

"We know that competing diesels with electric cooling fans have to dial back on power under extreme heat and altitude, so we decided on a viscous-controlled mechanical fan that has the capacity to move much more air across the radiator and intercooler in extreme conditions", said David Ives, Ford's diesel engine technical specialist. With 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque, the 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 powering Nissan's Titan XD is a different concept, straddling the border between half-ton and heavy-duty pickups. Payload capacity is also claimed to be best-in-class at 2,020 pounds. It'll even be available in F-150s fitted with the off-road FX4 package, but a Raptor diesel is not in the offing. It will also make a solid 440 pound-feet of torque and 240 horsepower, the sort of numbers that translate into solid towing and payload capacity.

Inheriting the technology of the 6.7L Power Stroke that propels the Ford Super Duty trucks, the 3.0L diesel engine uses the same compacted-graphite iron block material construction and forged-steel crank used in Ford's 2.7L V6 EcoBoost engine for greater rigidity and durability. The 10-speed automatic transmission can handle most of the diesel torque curve. It closes down the two radiator shutters to improve aerodynamic efficiency and reduce parasitic engine loss.

Iranian tanker burns, spills oil after collision off China's coast
State media reports that China dispatched several vessels to search for and rescue crew members as the vessel burned. The AP reports that this is the second collision for the National Iranian Tanker Company in less than two years.

The Ford F-Series was the top-selling vehicle in the 2017, topping sales of 896,000 units.

According to Ford, 70 percent of F-150 owners tow with their pickups.

Overall, automakers sold 2.4 million full-size pickup trucks a year ago, an increase of 5.6 percent compared with 2016.
