Reid announced he'd give incumbent starter Alex Smith the week off and start rookie passer Patrick Mahomes in his stead to close out the regular season. They clinched back-to-back AFC West titles for the first time in franchise history with their victory last week over Miami.
Of Mahomes, Reid said, "To have the opportunity to be in the room he's in is priceless".
Leading up to the game, Reid did not want to set the bar too high for what we might expect to see.
"Every snap he gets is a valuable snap for him", Reid said of Mahomes.
Mahomes, the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is being groomed as Smith's successor, but his assignment Sunday doesn't signify a changing of the guard.
Kabul: Five killed as ISIL bomber targets spy agency
On December 18, iS claimed responsibility for an attack on the intelligence agency's training center in Kabul . Qari Yusouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack in Helmand.
With the Chiefs, Mahomes saw limited action with the first-team offense during training camp and the preseason.
It's widely expected Mahomes takes over the Chiefs starting job next season in place of the 33-year-old Smith, who is wrapping up his fifth season in Kansas City. The conventional wisdom had been that Mahomes would sit this season and then take over for Alex Smith come next year. But fans continued to grumble about his conservative style, particularly during a four-game losing stretch that included poor passing performances against the Giants and Bills.
Suddenly, a meaningless game on New Year's Eve has a little bit of intrigue.
If Smith plays, he can break the club record for most touchdowns in a season since the AFL-NFL merger (Elvis Grbac had 28 in 2000).
