The rocket, fired at about 11:30 p.m., triggered early warning sirens in Ashkelon, the Lachish region and in the area around the Gaza Strip.

A network of Gaza tunnels allowed Hamas gunmen to blindside Israel's superior forces during the 2014 war and the Israelis, with United States help, have since stepped up work on counter-measures.

The control Hamas exercises over the Gaza Strip was evidenced as Israel once again destroyed a terror tunnel that extended from the Hamas-ruled territory into Israel, The Jerusalem Post reported Sunday.

"The IDF hold Hamas responsible for these aggressive acts originating from the Gaza Strip", the IDF said.

New evacuations were ordered in Carpinteria, a seaside city in Santa Barbara County that has been under fire threat for days. Firefighters in Southern California were on high alert for risky fire potential even before the first blazes broke out.

The New York Times story on the tunnel includes this atmospheric sentence suggesting the downside of Israel's destruction of the tunnel: "More immediately, the action against the tunnel injected another element of uncertainty into the simmering tensions over President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel". Iron Dome air defense system intercepted the missile, and no one was hurt.

Two Palestinians were killed early Saturday in Israeli strikes at locations south of Gaza City, said the Ministry of Health. Hamas also has a military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Monday's strikes came a day after Israel said it destroyed a tunnel built by Hamas that ran several hundred meters (yards) into Israeli territory.
