Cyclone Ockhi lends much-needed calm to campaign scenario

Rains driven by Cyclone Ochki lashed most parts of coastal Konkan in Maharashtra, including Mumbai on Tuesday.

Modi was set to address the public rally at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Inspired by his tweet, BJP leaders in Surat suspended all their campaign-related work and began shifting people to safer places, the ruling party MLA from Surat's Majura seat, Harsh Sanghvi, said. Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi held a poll rally in Anjar but cancelled three in Morbi, Dhrangadhra and Surendranagar due to the impending cyclone. He will now address the rally at the same venue on Thursday.

During the day, when nearly the entire state experienced a wet spell, Amit Shah's campaign meetings in Rajula town in Amreli district and in Mahuva and Shihor towns in Bhavnagar district were cancelled. The body said that there would be increased wave action in areas like Shivaji Park, Dadar and Cadell Road.

Former Congress strongman Shankersinh Vaghela, who has fl oated Jan Vikalp Morcha after quitting Congress, was also forced to cancel his roadshows and rallies in Junagadh, Mahuva and Palitana towns of Saurashtra.

Joint Secretary in the ministry Sanjeev Kumar Jindal also said the cyclone is slowing down and would have no impact in Gujarat, where the first of the two-phased assembly elections is due four days later.
